Bharti is engaged in diversified businesses such as Telecom Services, manufacturing and marketing Telephones, Horticulture, Insurance Software, BPO, etc. Rakesh, an electronics engineer, has a rich experience in managing evolving business operations and environments for over 30 years.

Rakesh is a member of Advisory Board of Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology & Management which has been established by Bharti and IIT, Delhi . He is also the member of Advisory Council of IIT Delhi ; International Advisory Council of Southern Methodist University (SMU), Dallas , USA ; Managing Society and Governing Board of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Board of Governors and Council of the Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, and the Board of Governors of the YMCA Institute of Engineering.

He is a life trustee of Bharti Foundation, which has been set up with a vision, “To help the underprivileged children and young people of our country realize their potential”. Rakesh is the Vice President of Nehru Sidhant Kender Trust, Ludhiana - a Trust that supports needy and deserving students annually for pursuing education by way of scholarships and awards. He is also the Chairman of the Akshaya Patra Foundation Advisory Board ( North India ) which runs a midday meal program and the President of Old Students Association, Government College , Ludhiana .

He is a member of the National Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and has been the Chairman of Northern Regional Council of CII for the year 2004-05.

During his Army career also, Col Sharma had served as an instructor in the best institutions of the Armed Forces like the National Defence Academy (NDA)-Pune , Chennai , Indian Military Academy-Dehradun, Officers Training Academy-Madras, Army Cadet College- Dehradun.
